Methodist Homes of Alabama & Northwest Florida
Corporate Office - Birmingham, AL
For more than 50 years, Methodist Homes has been leading the way in senior housing and care in Alabama and Northwest Florida. First formed in 1956, Methodist Homes was created with the mission of serving God’s ‘older children’. With that in mind, our communities are designed to provide a quality of life, not just a place to live. Our Christian principles define us and drive us to provide superior, quality, life-enhancing services, comprehensive levels of care, and the faith-based loving kindness that people of all faiths deserve. Since 1961, Methodist Homes’ network of communities has grown to include 13 communities from Northern Alabama to Northwest Florida. Our communities feature independent living homes & apartments, affordable housing options, care levels from assisted living to specialized memory care, to comprehensive levels of skilled nursing care. Simply put - our communities are designed to meet your needs. We have the services you need when you need them. We have a community that’s right for you!
In February of 2010 the Board of Trustees of Methodist Homes adopted a Strategic Plan which includes a Vision Statement, a restated Mission Statement, and a list of Core Values.
Methodist Homes aspires to be a national leader in shaping the culture of aging by enriching the lives of older adults and all those who serve them through innovative and life-affirming faith-based community services.

Fair Haven Retirement Community
Through extensive research, the plan for Methodist Homes' first home became a reality in 1961. The original design of Fair Haven Retirement Center in Birmingham, Alabama, accommodated 140 assisted living units that have since grown to a continuum of care providing independent apartments, assisted living, specialty care assisted living, skilled nursing and Alzheimer’s care. The 30-bed state-of-the-art Alzheimer’s center opened in 1991 to continue Fair Haven’s tradition of leading the industry. We believe that this was the first center in our region to be completely dedicated to residents suffering from Alzheimer’s disease. In 2003 a 20-bed private health care wing was added, bringing the total number of nursing beds at Fair Haven to 197. In addition to the nursing beds, Fair Haven offers 62 independent living apartments, 48 assisted living beds and 32 specialty care assisted living beds. In 2011, Fair Haven acquired 62 additional nursing beds in preparation for a Master Plan development.
Wesley Manor Retirement Community
In 1968, Dothan, Alabama became the home of Methodist Homes' second retirement community, Wesley Manor Retirement Center, providing 54 assisted living units and 66 nursing beds. Additional accommodations have been added through the years to provide apartments and an additional 50 nursing beds. Another state-of-the-art 50-unit Alzheimer’s wing was developed in 1997. A 16-unit Specialty Care Assisted Living Facility (SCALF) opened in 2005.
Wesley Gardens Assisted Living
Methodist Homes continued its mission of serving all of God’s “Older Children” by purchasing a 60-apartment assisted living community in Montgomery, Alabama in 1989, and then adding an additional 12 apartments. Wesley Gardens, located near the entrance of East Chase Mall, has become one of the most efficient and attractive assisted living homes in central Alabama.
Mathison Retirement Community
Panama City, Florida
In 2000, the Mathison Retirement Community, a 74-unit assisted living home, named in honor of Dr. Si Mathison and his family, was opened in Panama City, Florida. The Mathison Retirement Community offers amenities such as a jacuzzi, tennis courts, swimming pool, and spacious, attractive living rooms and dining area. Residents of Panama City enjoy visiting to take advantage of the restaurant-like dining room and food service. Methodist Homes believes that there is not a comparable home anywhere in northwest Florida. In 2011, a portion of the building was converted into a memory care unit to care for persons with mild to moderate dementia.
Wesley Haven Villa
In 2002, Methodist Homes competed statewide in Florida for an affordable assisted living demonstration project and was awarded $3 million from the Florida Housing Finance Authority as the top qualifier. This project, known as Wesley Haven Villa, led to Florida’s adoption of the use of tax credits for the development of affordable assisted living in Florida. Wesley Haven Villa’s 55 units opened in August of 2005.
Haven of Our Lady of Peace
In 2000, Methodist Homes entered into a partnership with Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola, Florida, a member of Ascension Health. Ascension Health is one of the largest nonprofit health care providers in the United States and was formed by the Daughters of Charity and Sisters of Mercy. Our consortium, in July of 2000, constructed the first nursing home in the Florida panhandle to be designed such that dining, social, nursing, and hygienic care needs are met in a neighborhood atmosphere. Haven of Our Lady of Peace provides 120 nursing beds in a serene, forested setting.
Wesley Acres / Wesley Acres II
In 1981, Methodist Homes expanded its mission to Decatur, Alabama, to serve senior persons with limited incomes. Methodist Homes was awarded by HUD, in a competitive process, Wesley Acres, a 100-unit home. Because of the initial project success, Methodist Homes applied for and was awarded funds for an additional 20 units in late 1998. Wesley Acres II opened its doors in October 2001.
Methodist Homes extended this concept to serve senior persons with limited incomes by competing for, and receiving the award of, 68 affordable units located in Anniston, Alabama, in 1986. Wesley Apartments provides safe, affordable housing to senior persons with limited incomes.
In 1986, Methodist Homes competed for and was awarded by HUD 48 units of affordable housing in Selma, Alabama. This project, The Epworth House, also serves senior persons with limited incomes.
In 1997, the Alabama Housing Finance Authority awarded Methodist Homes funds on a competitive basis to develop Wesley Glen Apartments in Decatur, Alabama. The 55-unit apartment community began service in February 1999 for senior persons who have limited income, and is adjacent to the Wesley Acres property.
In 2000, Methodist Homes competed for and received a commitment from the Alabama Housing Finance Authority to develop affordable housing in Anniston, Alabama. This 55-unit community, named Wesley Park Apartments, opened in 2002 and is restricted to those with limited income.
Wesley Scott Place
In July 2000, Methodist Homes competed for, and was awarded by the Florida Housing Finance Authority, Wesley Scott Place, a 44-unit apartment community. This rent-restricted project was used by Simpson Housing Solutions in their national marketing publicity.
